Ethical Culture was founded in New York in 1876, its aim is to create a more humane society. Their leaders and members were instrumental in the establishment of the Visiting Nurses Association, the Legal Aid Society, the NAACP, the ACLU, National Urban League, Ethical Fieldston Scool, and many other institutions.
The New York Society for Ethical Culture and its affiliate agency the United Social Services Board continue to serve the community in many ways. Current initiatives include:
· The Supervised Visitation Project where children can meet with estranged parents in a safe environment.
· The Homeless Women’s Shelter provides comfort and support to women who are temporarily homeless. With NYSEC's efforts, many are on their way to finding a new home and job.
· The Queens Soccer Project that provides financial and logistical support for dozens of boys and girls of all ages to experience the power of sport and togetherness - children who would otherwise go without.
· A Homeless Artists Project that organizes annual performances in front of live audiences and provides artists the opportunity to showcase their wonderful talents with integrity, keeping hope alive.
· The public Advocacy Forums educate and inform the public on current social and political issues. Recent speakers have included Al Gore, Nicholas Kristof, Mary Robinson, Richard A.
